It was an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Needing one run to win off the last ball, Oman’s Jeel Tanna was run out to end the ICC U19 World Cup Qualifier Division Two summit clash against Kuwait in a tie in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday.

With both the teams remaining unbeaten in the group-stage and little separating them even in the final, the match turned out to be a low-scoring thriller and after the tie, the tournament’s organisers declaring the teams as joint winners.

Chasing 132 to win, Oman needed eight runs to win in the final over but was all out for 131 in 50 overs. Earlier, Oman bowlers strangled the rival batting with the tournament’s highest wicket-taker Kevin Kattokaran, with 16,  picking three for 20. He was ably supported by Adeel Abbas with two for 22. Six of the seven Oman bowlers bagged a wicket as Kuwait was restricted to a modest 131 in 49.2 overs.

Hamoud Amanullah was the top-scorer with 23 while extras contributed 28 including 19 wides.

Oman’s bowling had been exceptional throughout the tournament with Sanjay Ravindra emerging as the second-highest wicket-taker with 15.

Chasing the target, Oman struggled early on and was reduced to 36 for three in 16 overs. It then slumped to 81 for six in 36th over.

However, a 21-run seventh wicket partnership between captain Prathamesh Kumble (14) and Amanpreet Singh Sirah (17) got the team back into the game. But both got out in a space of six balls at the same score to leave Oman struggling at 103 for eight in the 43rd over.

Yash Mehta (15 n.o.) and Jeel then added precious 28 runs till the latter was run out. Opener Adeel Abbas top-scored with 19 while Amanpreet and Neev Poojari contributed 17 and 15

respectively.
